Vitamin K: An Important Nutrient for Strong, Healthy Bones

When most people think about Vitamin K, they think about blood clotting. But emerging research suggests that Vitamin K may also play an important role in maintaining healthy bones throughout life.

Your skeleton is constantly changing through a process called bone remodeling. Old or damaged bone is removed while new bone is built. Maintaining the proper balance between these processes is essential for long-term bone strength and healthy aging.

Research has identified Vitamin K-dependent proteins, including GAS6, that may help coordinate communication between bone-building cells and bone-removing cells. This cellular communication helps support the complex process of bone remodeling.

Interestingly, bone-building cells appear to have a particularly high demand for Vitamin K. Research has found substantially greater activity of Vitamin K-related enzymes in bone-building cells, highlighting the importance of this nutrient in supporting healthy skeletal function.

Vitamin K2 and Calcium

Vitamin K2 is especially interesting because it helps activate proteins involved in directing calcium where the body needs it most—including bones and teeth.

Foods containing Vitamin K include:

• Egg yolks• Liver• Certain cheeses, including Gouda and Brie• Fermented foods• Natto, a traditional fermented soybean food• Leafy green vegetables, which are particularly rich in Vitamin K1

Strong Bones Require More Than Calcium

At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we believe that healthy aging requires looking beyond a single nutrient. Bone health depends on a combination of factors, including:

Adequate protein intake✓ Healthy Vitamin D levels✓ Appropriate Vitamin K intake✓ Regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise✓ Maintaining healthy muscle mass✓ Avoiding excessive soft drink consumption✓ A nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet✓ Supporting overall metabolic and hormonal health

Calcium alone is not the complete answer to healthy bones. Your bones are living, metabolically active tissue that require proper nutrition, movement, hormones, and cellular energy to remain strong.

At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we take a comprehensive, functional medicine approach to healthy aging. Our goal is to help identify nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, and lifestyle factors that may affect your long-term health—including your bones, muscles, and overall vitality.
