Ultra-Processed Foods: How Your Food Choices Affect Metabolism, Mood & Cravings
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we believe healthy weight management is about much more than counting calories. The foods you eat can influence your metabolism, blood sugar, inflammation, energy, focus, mood, cravings, and even your relationship with food.
What Are Ultra-Processed Foods?
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are highly formulated, packaged products that often contain numerous ingredients, including added sugars, refined carbohydrates, excess sodium, flavorings, and other additives.
A simple place to start is the ingredient list. Foods with a short list of recognizable ingredients are generally easier to incorporate into a whole-food lifestyle. Compare single-ingredient almond flour with a packaged snack containing a long list of unfamiliar ingredients.
When shopping, don't rely solely on front-of-package marketing. Look at the Nutrition Facts panel and ingredient list. Pay attention to added sugar, sodium, saturated fat, serving sizes, and how frequently these foods appear in your diet.
It's Not Just About Calories
Two foods can contain similar calories but have very different nutritional and metabolic effects. A nutrient-dense food such as avocado provides healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, while many highly processed foods may deliver calories without the same nutritional value or satiety.
A diet dominated by UPFs may also make it harder to manage blood sugar, cholesterol, hunger, and inflammation. At Egan Wellness, we look beyond the scale and consider the whole metabolic picture.
Why Do UPFs Trigger Cravings?
Many highly processed foods are engineered to be extremely rewarding and easy to overconsume. Their combination of sugar, fat, salt, and refined carbohydrates can reinforce cravings and encourage us to reach for them repeatedly.
Your environment matters, too. If cookies, chips, candy, and other treats are always visible and readily available, you're more likely to eat them. Changing what is available in your home can change what you reach for.
Another important strategy is avoiding long periods of under-eating. Going through the day without adequate protein, fiber, or nutritious meals can leave you especially vulnerable to intense cravings later.
Your Food Environment Matters
Our modern food environment makes healthy choices challenging. Grocery stores use eye-level displays, checkout areas, and convenient packaging to encourage impulse purchases.
Try these simple strategies:
Shop primarily around the perimeter for vegetables, fruits, proteins, eggs, and other minimally processed foods.
Read labels carefully in the center aisles.
Look above and below eye level for less heavily marketed options.
Keep nutritious foods visible and convenient at home.
Replace packaged staples with simple homemade alternatives when practical.
For example, instead of relying on a sodium-heavy packaged marinara sauce, try whole canned tomatoes, olive oil, herbs, and spices. Small substitutions can make healthy eating more sustainable without sacrificing convenience.
Think Mediterranean
The Mediterranean dietary pattern provides an excellent framework for improving food quality. Emphasize vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and quality sources of protein, including seafood.
Think of your plate as being built primarily around real, nutrient-dense foods, with highly processed foods playing a much smaller role.
And don't underestimate the social side of eating. Preparing meals, eating with family and friends, walking, and staying connected can support healthy behaviors while reducing the isolation that may contribute to emotional or reward-driven eating.
The Egan Wellness Approach
At Egan Wellness & Med Spa, we take a functional and personalized approach to wellness. Nutrition is one important piece of a larger picture that may include metabolism, hormones, lifestyle, sleep, activity, stress, and individualized nutritional support.
The goal isn't perfection. It's progress—one better choice at a time.
